The Open BTS Project is an effort to construct an open-source Unix application that uses the Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) to present a GSM air interface ("Um") to standard GSM handset and uses the Asterisk software PBX to connect calls. The combination of the ubiquitous GSM air interface with VoIP backhaul could form the basis of a new type of cellular network that could be deployed and operated at substantially lower cost than existing technologies in greenfields in the developing world. August 2008: Black Rock City Field Trial

We're still not releasing a lot of code, but we did field-test at Burning Man 2008. If you were at Black Rock City and your phone showed funny networks like 901-55, 666-315 or BRC315G, that was us. If you made a cellular call to the real world, that was also us, although it was probably an accident on our part. Read all about it here.
